March Contest Question

March is the ‘good luck’ month! In his farewell speech, Lou Gehrig famously said: “I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Who do you think is the luckiest player, manager, or team in baseball? Luckiest play? Luckiest fans? Tell us who, tell us why. Good…LUCK!

Winning Answer

Growing up, I always wanted to be a husband and a father, and now I have three great sons and an amazing wife. My oldest James is playing 8U baseball here in Texas, and I am the head coach of his team. We had a super close game last night and my son hit a line drive out to center field, hit the fence, and as he ran toward second base, I signaled to him to keep running towards home. He had his first home run, and I felt like the luckiest man in the world to be able to see that. All the hard work at team practice, batting practice afterschool, and working with him at home is paying off. As I walked towards the dugout to call out fielding positions for the next inning, through the fence I saw my wife and youngest son playing with a toy bat and glove. I’m lucky because I’ve got three sons; I get to experience the greatest game in the world with them, and build a strong relationship and bond with them.

Game ball went to James for that home run, and luckily my mother-in-law recorded the action. I think we watched it about half a dozen times before bed together, and I know it’s a memory with him that I will never forget. There’s a ton of examples of lucky plays, teams, and runs made in this great game we call baseball, but I don’t think anything can beat the feeling of watching your son’s first homer, the sound of a crisp throw hitting a glove, or the joy of watching him make a great play you’ve worked with him on for hours and hours. Luckiest person in baseball is a proud Dad for sure.
